Haus Ulv Kennels believes in the science of breeding and the genetics within the bloodlines used in a breeding program.
Not every breeder out there does DNA or health testing such as testing for DM or certifying hips and elbows, nor do they research or understand the genetics behind the dogs they are breeding. Most breeders just place emphasis on how many titles or championships the dogs have in their pedigree. This is referred to as “how much red ink is their pedigree”. Titles don't make the dog, nor do they guarantee the quality of the progeny. The offspring are what indicates if those dogs in the breeding program are good producers. When just breeding dogs with titles, the gene pool ends up being limited and the potential of dogs with good genetics could be missed out on. Not all titled dogs should be bred, there are some titled dogs that are bred repeatedly despite them passing on genetic health issues such as Lumbosacral transitional vertebrae, but since they are titled, that gets overlooked and health of the progeny is compromised. It is important for a breeder to understand the genetics behind their breedings and to be critical of what they produce and not end up being "Kennel Blind". As the saying goes, "Knowing is half the battle". Knowing if dogs in a breeding program are genetically sound can help to diminish bad recessive or dominant genes that may cause diseases that are detrimental to the longevity of puppies produced. Dogs with good genetics will pass that to their offspring. Sound temperament, correct structure and good health is part of those genetics that is desired between the breeding pair. There will be a higher possibility of healthy puppies that will be able to add to the future breeding programs. They should have the ability to work in any venue chosen, or to be an outstanding canine companion.
It is the responsibility of breeders to understand the roll genetics plays and not just breed dogs but actually have a breeding program with a goal of bettering the breed. Knowing the genetics in the dogs used can assist in reaching that goal.
Haus Ulv Kennels is an AKC certified breeder and has completed and passed the courses above to expand our knowledge as a responsible and ethical breeder.
